What Happens on Your First Visit

 Case History

A case history is very important in osteopathic practice.
Many questions are asked relating to the presenting complaint, medical history, current or past medication, past injuries and general well being. All this information leads to an overall picture of what may be causing the problem. Sometimes if there is any doubt as to the cause of the presenting complaint you may be asked to see your GP for further tests.

Examination

Examination of the Lumbar Spine

Low back pain can be caused by injury or trauma for eg disc bulge, degeneration, stenosis, muscle strain and facet joint injury. Damage can also lead to nerves being compressed causing for eg Sciatica.

Poor muscle tone, lack of exercise or heavy workloads can put people at greater risk of back pain, but most back problems can be treated effectively with Osteopathy.
The use of certain techniques and exercises can repair and prevent most problems from recurring. The osteopath uses techniques to assess and diagnose the origin of the back pain and can then work out a specific treatment plan. Soft tissue massage and manipulation to the joints of the spine can bring fast relief. In some cases, however, there may be some residual discomfort but with rest and stretches these symptoms subside in time depending on the problem.

                              Head and Neck Examination

Head and Neck problems are very common. Many people complain of symptoms such as headache, pins and needles in the arm and hand and neck stiffness. Specific techniques are used to evaluate tissues and joints to determine the causes of pain. Treatment of this area involves soft tissue massage, articulation and manipulation of joints. Every care and attention is taken with regard to manipulation, the process is explained with consideration given to the patients needs and concerns.
